Many things change over the years, such as hairstyles, clothes, the price of milk and so many other things. Now it appears that divorce is also evolving, and women may be benefitting.

A survey done by the Pew Economic Mobility Project indicates that more women will see financial gains after a divorce in the future. Specifically, 20 percent of women will see a 25 percent increase in their income after they divorce.

Twenty years ago that wasn't the case. In fact, twice as many women as before will see financial gains in their future after a divorce.

The study also found that men will likely only see a 16 percent increase in income after a divorce. Additionally, about half of men and half of women who divorce will see a decline in their finances.

Much has changed for women in the last few decades. More women are going to college and obtaining advanced degrees. Additionally, the income level between men and women is leveling out. Both could be contributing to the new trend.

Couples who are struggling in their marriage may try to make things work, but sometimes divorce is the best option. However, there are a number of things to consider when couples are going through a divorce. For instance, how will property be divided up? Couples with children must also settle child custody and child support issues.

Couples in Illinois and elsewhere who have chosen to divorce would likely benefit from working with an attorney who is experienced in family law matters. An attorney can help settle the various matters involved in a divorce to allow each individual to begin their new life.
